This group will be undertaking walks of about up to three miles, usually with refreshments at the end of the walk. Walks will take place between March and October only, each year.
Some of our groups allow visitors to have one taster session. If you wish to know more, contact our Groups Coordinator using the “groups” link on the contact us page. Please do not attend a group meeting without prior permission from the group leader. Group leaders are not required to justify their decision.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR FOR THE WALK AND THE WEATHER.

August
This month's walk was a loop starting and ending at Jennycliff car park.
9 of us met in the car park just as it started to rain. The weather forecast had suggested a fine day from 10 o'clock onward, but it wasn't to be. We had to put on or take off our waterproofs several times during the walk.
We walked from the car park down the exit road and pass Fort Stamford. This structure is one of the many Palmerston forts built around Plymouth in the 1860s and 1870s designed to protect England from a French invasion. The invasion never happened and the forts were never used for their intended purpose. Most of them are now derelict, but Fort Stamford has been converted into a health and fitness centre.
After passing the fort, we turned left down Saint John's Road and then Lawrence Road heading towards Mount Batten. Before Mount Batten beach we again turned left and joined the south west coast path. The path rises, first gently and then more steeply, up to Jennycliff where we started from. There had been heavy rain overnight and the path had a few large puddles which needed to be carefully avoided.
When we reached the top, there was a lovely view across Plymouth Sound. The rain clouds disappeared and the sun came out making the sea look beautiful. We admired the view for a while before moving on to The Jennycliff Cafe where we had lunch. After lunch we all went our separate ways, some going straight home and others staying for an ice-cream from the van in the car park.
July
10 members met in the waterfront car park in Saltash and walked to the first entrance of Salt Mill park, where we enjoyed excellent views looking up the Tamar towards Cargreen and back down to the 2 bridges crossing the river.
We were lucky that the temperature stayed manageable, and a little breeze also helped. Returning the same way we continued on to Ashtorre cafe for light refreshments. It's a lovely spot by the river, with a large balcony and outdoor seating available. This allowed us further views looking on towards Mount Edgecumbe.
After our break we had a little wander around the waterfront area nearby, and then 9 of us continued by car onto Tamar garden centre. There we had an excellent lunch sat outside on patio tables under shade.
It seemed a well received walk for a lot of people had not been aware of this particular area. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind for our 19th August meeting.
June
Our June short walk was again unfortunately affected by wet weather, and plan B was coffee and a chat in the Life Centre cafe. Most of the group chose to cancel, so 5 of us met there and enjoyed the opportunity to catch up.
Once again the intended Central Park walk will be kept for another day, and we keep our fingers crossed for the 15th July when we attempt a walk at Saltash Waterside.
May
8 members of the group met at Leg O'mutton car park near Yelverton on a drizzly morning, and decided to go on to Moor T cafe at Long Ash Garden Centre for a cuppa and to let the worst of the rain pass.
Sarah was then able to lead us on a shorter walk for approximately 45 minutes around the lovely moorland area nearby. It was good to finally get out for some fresh air and views.
Following this, everyone was happy to go on to Yelverton Golf club for lunch and a good catch up. Fingers crossed we will have a totally dry walk the next time we get together in June.
April
Our April walk was cancelled at the last moment because very heavy rain was forecast. Instead, we went to Plymouth Garden Centre where we had tea, coffee and a little lunch. The rain was as bad as forecast and we were glad to be indoors. Later, when the rain had stopped, some of us indulged in some retail therapy.
we hope to do the walk later in the year when the weather is better.
