Moor’s Edge u3a was formed in September 2014 with just 39 members at the first meeting. Initially, meetings were held every two months.
Now more than 10 years later we have 120-130 members and over 20 groups. We meet every month, except August, at The Woolwell Centre on the 2nd Friday of every month. We have a guest speaker at the monthly meetings apart from December. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available for just £1.00.
At the December meeting we have a social with a raffle, quiz, singing and music provided by some of the groups. Mince pies and clotted cream are provided for free.
Our groups are varied, but if we don’t have a group you would like, a new one can be created. All that is needed is 3 or more people to be interested in a subject for a group to be started.
Moor’s Edge u3a is part of the national u3a organization and u3a stands for The University of the Third Age. The name refers to the third stage of life, retirement, with the first stage being childhood and the second stage being employment. It has nothing to do with any academic institution.
The u3a movement is a non-religious, non-political charity which makes no distinction according to your age, gender, race or religion.
Each branch of the u3a is self-funding and independently run by the members for the members.
The ethos of the u3a is “learn, laugh, live”. We endeavor to learn from each other by passing on knowledge and skills we already have. Having fun is all part of the process.
