March

NIne members of the group enjoyed lunch together at the London Inn, and then eight of us carried on with our darts session.

With an equal number of players on each of the two teams, we quickly reached the point of needing a double to end the game.  Unfortunately, the doubles proved elusive and after another three rounds both teams agreed on the 'nearest the bull' option.  Joyce, for the Red team, got very close to the bull and that dart proved unbeatable.  However, the highest score with three darts came from Sarah with a 78 for the Greens in the very first round and despite Peter scoring a couple of 70's, the first 78 was also unbeatable.  The Red team won the first game, thanks to Joyce.

The second game also started with high scores.  Jean scored an amazing 112 in the very first round - again this was impossible to better by the other players.  Both teams needed a double by round 4, but after three more rounds we again opted for nearest the bull, and it was Jean, again, who completed the double and won that game for the Green team.

In the third game, Joyce got a 77 in the first round for the Red team,  which nobody else could better and after a few more rounds where doubles seemed impossible to get, it was back to the single dart from each player to decide the game.  This time it was Jill who won the game for the Green team.

We had a couple of hours of fun, encouraging each other to do well which is the spirit in which we always play - the make up of the teams varies every session and we all have a good time.

February

Eight members met up at the London Inn, Horrabridge on the third Friday of the month.

After a good lunch we all started to play our first game. The first round didn’t get any high scores but by the second round Peter had scored 77 with his three darts. The game continued to the fifth round, by which time both teams needed a double to check out. Peter stepped up and got the double 2 needed by the Green team to win not only the game but also was the highest scorer with his 77.

The second game started with Peter again scoring highly with his first three darts – 84 this time! By the fourth round doubles were needed by both teams, but it was Jean who got the double 2 that the Red team needed to win. No one else managed to beat Peter’s score so he took those honours yet again.

The third and final game went on for much longer, as both teams struggled to get their final double to secure a win. By the ninth round it was decided that we would resort to the ‘nearest the bull’ to decide, and Pauline stepped up with her dart which went right up to the wire of the outer bull’s eye – needless to say, no one else managed to get the bull so Pauline’s Red team took their second win. However, it was Marilyn from the Green team who scored highest with three darts, with 78 in the second round.

All in all, very even play over the three games, but we all need to improve getting the doubles to finish, as it’s very hit and miss at present. We did have a fun afternoon, though with lots of chat and laughter and encouragement to all players, whichever team they happened to be on, which is what we all want, of course. We will do it all again on Friday 27 th March, the fourth Friday of the month this time.

January

Only seven of our eleven members were able to come along for our first meeting of the new year, but we managed to enjoy our lunch and followed it up with a (rather extended) game of darts!

We had a few high scores in the game, starting with Jill getting 55 in the first round, Sarah achieved 73 in the second round but Marilyn scored  an amazing 98 in the fifth round, which proved unbeatable!

By the time that Marilyn hit her 78, both teams were needing a double to end the game.  However, it took us all another four rounds of trying before we all decided to try for 'nearest the bull' as the single one, double one that both teams needed was proving very elusive!

We all took our turns and Sarah's dart was closest to the bull which secured the win for the Red team.  As Marilyn was also on the Red team, as the highest scorer with three darts, she secured the double win for the Reds.  Bad luck, Green team, as the scores were pretty level all the way throughout the game.

Next month we will try to improve our scores and will be meeting up at midday on Friday, 20th February to do it all again!

December

Eight members met up at the London Inn, Horrabridge for some lunch followed by two games of darts.

The first game started with a brilliant score of 78 made by Marilyn for the Red team which proved unbeatable, despite some very close competition by Sarah with 77 and Pauline with 67.  The scores dropped dramatically after the first round, but eventually both teams needed doubles to win by the fourth round.  The game continued into the sixth round when Jill got the double four needed by the Red team to win.  So one nil to the Red team.

The second game started less well, with the exception of Peter, who scored 49 with his first three darts.  It took us until the third round for the high scores to return, when Sarah scored 52, Marilyn scored 56 but Jean got a 59 which proved to be the highest score in the game.  In the seventh round both teams needed doubles to win, and Jean got the dreaded double one to win for the Green Team.

With honours even, we ended the session there and we wish all our u3a friends a Very Merry Christmas and Happy 2026.

October

Only ten members of the group turned up for lunch at the London Inn on Friday, 17th October but with even numbers we did not have to ask A.N.Other to join us!

After a very tasty lunch, we started to play the first game, starting from 501 as usual.  The Red team, led by Pauline, started off with 44 for the first throw but then Jean, for the Green team, scored 67 so the competition was on.!  The scoring after that went pretty evenly between the two teams, and by the 5th round both teams needed a double to win.  Unfortunately doubles seemed to be very few and far between - the ones we did get were in the wrong bed.  By the time we reached the 10th round in the game we all elected to throw one dart for 'nearest the bull' to decide the game.   Jean's throw was so close it seemed unbeatable and the Red team couldn't beat it, but Sarah's dart edged it - however as they were both on the Green team, it really didn't matter very much.

No-one managed to get a higher score with three darts than Jean so her 67 was the winner - Green team took both honours for the first game.

The second game started with Jean getting 58 and it looked as if that may be the highest score, but in the third round Joyce scored 71 with three darts for the Red team.  As the game progressed, scores were again fairly equal for both teams and it ended up with both teams requiring a double seven to win the game.  Although seven is supposed to be a lucky number, it was an elusive one for both teams and from the fourth round up to the tenth round neither one could get the final double!  On the eleventh round we opted for 'nearest the bull' again, and Sarah got the closest for a second win for the Green team but with Joyce taking honours with her 71 for the Red team.

We welcomed a new member, Alan, to the group and hope that he enjoyed his first outing with the darts group.   We will be doing it all again at the London Inn, Horrabridge, next month on Friday 21st November at midday for lunch or 1pm for anyone not eating there.

September

Seven members enjoyed lunch at the London Inn before an eighth joined for the darts games. In the first game Marilyn had the highest score of 92. Jean scored the double to finish a win for the green team. In the second game Marilyn was the highest scorer again with an 86. Peter was nearest the bull to win for the red team. In the decider Jennie was closest to the bull winning 2 to 1 games for the green team. In the third game Jim scored 90, however, the biggest shout out has to go to Peter scoring a magnificent 122 in the third game. We think that is the highest score since the group was formed several years ago.

Success!
